Pope Francis I (Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, from Argentina) has been elected as the new Pope. White smoke billowed from the chimney atop of the Sistine Chapel earlier this evening to announce that a new Pope had been selected by the conclave of cardinals gathered in the Vatican. The new head of the Catholic Church around the world has been elected after only two days. The as yet unnamed new Pope replaces Pope Benedict XVI who unconventionally stepped down from his position last month.
