Hundreds of thousands of faithful and tourists have crowded into St Peter’s Square for the inauguration Mass of Pope Francis as his papacy formally begins.
Onlookers in the Vatican will hear from the first-ever Pope from the Americas and the first from outside Europe in more than a millennium, who will officially receive the ring and the pallium, a wool stole, during Tuesday’s installation.
Pope Francis, 76, was selected by cardinals to be the 266th leader of the world’s 1.2billion Catholics earlier this month, replacing Benedict XVI, who stepped down due to his advanced age.
